Customers like the brightness of the speakers. They mention that they have great highs and mids, and provide crisp, clean sound as long as they aren't being pushed too hard. The tweeter is a pizo type, round with sharp highs, while the woofer is polypro. They are warmer, brighter, and clearer, with excellent highs. However, some customers mention that the bass is shaking, but they do provide enough low end that music sounds tight and accurate. The drop-off is sharp enough that effectively you can't hear it unless you're standing close to the speakers, or if the speakers are being pressed too hard, or the bass has a sharp drop- off.

So, these SS-B1000 are a real big surprise. First impression is they sound like more expensive speakers. No kidding. They are bright, and fairly clear, even when driven near their max. Yes, they are lacking in bass, but what are you expecting from a 5.25" two way speaker? By themselves, they sound good and do have a nice little base kick, but their mid-range and high end are their best attributes. I set the yamaha sub crossover frequency at 100hz to overlap a bit on the SSB1000 low end of 80 hz. This allows the sub to cover the weaker low end of the Sonys and sounds really nice.
I have a feeling these little Sonys can perform better, especially seeing as they have the same drivers used in more expensive Sony speakers. So first the speaker was opened up and there is no sound dampening inside. By adding some dampening, the base can be improved, and reflected sound from the back wall of the case can be dampened improving clarity and presence in the mid range and give the speaker a warmer sound. That would be nice because although I think they are clear, they do sound "cool" and "crisp". Could use a little "warming up". I also think a good 2-way crossover would improve sound quality too because I think vocals and cymbals should have more presence. Regardless, these sound better right out of the box than the $100-150/pr similar size 2-way speakers I listened to at Best Buy.
After playing around with the equalizer on the receiver, I felt the best setting was just simple flat line. No boost and no cuts. They sound nice as is.
The speakers arrived undamaged and well packed. The fit and finish of the simple black faux wood grain MDF cabinet was good. No glue runs, no rattles and uniform finish. And its nice the cabinets are a dense MDF and not fiber board (MDF gives better sound). Grills are easy on/off and fit tight. They look nice, but I don't like the open sides of the grills because the gap lets dust settle on the cones.
I specifically was looking for a small bookshelf speaker with good mid-range and high end. Bass was not important because of the 12" subwoofer they are paired with. More expensive speakers in similar size have better bass, something I did not need or want to pay for. So these fit the bill perfectly. I'm happy, and at $55 a pair, its hard to go wrong.
Update 11/10/2012: Warm up and clarify the SSB1000 by adding acoustic sound dampener: Used 1" thick by approx 4x5" high density open cell polyester foam (commonly used as sound dampener in speakers) or poly fiberfill. Placed this right behind the 5.25" woofer to dampen reflected sound off the back of the cabinet. This enhances clarity, and gave the speaker a warmer sound commonly associated with better grade speakers. Bass was enhanced too.
The foam was added by removing the 5.25" woofer. To remove the woofer, carefully pry the plastic trim ring from around the speaker. It is held on by 6 "studs" that extend into the cabinet and have a little glue on them. Once removed, the screws holding the speaker on are exposed. Remove the screws and carefully pry the speaker free of the cabinet. Now the foam can be installed. I cut a square just big enough that it fit snug and covered the lower half of the back below the port.
Update 11/31/2012: Install a real crossover: The speakers have no real crossover. The tweeters do have a 1.2 uF capacitor to cut low frequencies. But a 1.2 uF capacitor means the speaker is crossed at about 16,500Hz. WAY too high!!! Tweeters are commonly crossed at 3000 to 5000Hz. So the result is the woofer is making most of the upper mid-range and lower highs that are typically done by a tweeter. And there is no choke coil to limit the high end the woofer is handling, so its straining to reproduce high end sound.
This was fixed by installing high quality crossovers from Infinity Reference 2000.5 two way speakers (they originally sold for about $400/pr) These Infinity crossovers cross at about 3000Hz (lower voice range) and are a superior design (3rd order Butterworth) over commonly used crossovers. Found these brand new on Ebay for $4.75 each. eBay item number is 370556341686 or use any 2way crossover with similar specs. These were installed in each speaker and the results are truly amazing. There was a huge "hole" in the upper mid-range and highs caused by the lack of a proper crossover. Now vocals really jump out and cymbals sizzle. Also, less watts are going through the 5.25" woofer, and that has effectively raised the power handling of the speakers. The difference between the OE Sony and my custom modified Sony speakers is like night and day. Warmer, brighter and clearer. The mods really bring the speakers from a $55/pr speaker to a $200/pr speakers easy!
I know most people won't customize their speakers like I did. But at the price of these speakers I felt comfortable experimenting with tried and true modifications/upgrades.
Update: 12/26/2012. I noticed at high volume the tweeters were breaking up. Probably because the 3000Hz crossover point is putting more watts into the tweeters than with the OE capacitor. So a new set of tweeters were ordered for all 4 speakers. I wanted a tweeter that could handle the wattage its getting with this crossover, and still have a flat response from 3000 to 20000 Hz. Found this Tang Band 25-302SH 1" Shielded Neodymium Dome Tweeter that has an amazingly flat response curve to over 20,000Hz. At $21 apiece, they are half the price of these speakers! But I thought it was worth it. (found a retailer that sells them for $25 a pair). The result is truly amazing. The presence is right there in front of you. Clarity is way beyond anything in this price range. But that is to be expected of a tweeter that is used by many speaker companies in $600 and up speakers. So the bottom line is all these mods bring the price to $47 each speaker. Not bad, and I have one heck of an amazing book shelf speaker for less than $50 each.
I listen to a variety of music - rock, country, electronica, dubsteb, DnB, trance, jazz, orchestra. I use several sources for the receiver, primarily streaming 160kbps Ogg Vorbis from the Internet however I also listen to my personal collection quite a bit as well which is a combination of quality MP3 (V0 Lame - ~245kbps VBR) and FLAC. I occasionally listen to FM as well.
First, I should state that I listen to these while I work in my garage and not as part of a dedicated listening session. I would not consider myself an audiophile but I love music and generally favor clean and crisp audio with tight bass over volume.
The SS-B1000's have served me well in nearly all situations, however they are short on bass. Their mid-bass (~95-150Hz) is solid without being muddy. There is a noticeable drop off in volume from 95Hz to 90Hz which remains flat until about 60Hz. Below 60Hz, the drop-off is sharp enough that effectively you can't hear it unless it's a very quiet and simple section of track (or you are just doing a tone test). For me, this has translated into excellent sound reproduction for rock and country across the board. The majority of the jazz and orchestra tracks I've listened to have sounded great as well with only a few having noticeable absenteeism from the music. On the electronica/dubstep/DnB/etc front things are more difficult. It reproduces most tracks well and I am pleased overall. The weak bass is much more noticeable for me in general with these genres. However, there are a few tracks who's frequencies sweep back and forth across the low frequency drop-off point of the speakers in such a fashion that it's just annoying. Still, I must say, the low frequency performance of these speakers exceeded my expectation for such a form factor.
Vocals sound great and the treble is crisp and a bit warm - I don't particularly care for "bright" speakers.
Pros:
- Clean sound
- Plenty of volume for my needs in the garage (I've never even turned up the SX-3700 beyond 3.5)
- Solid mid-bass
- Small footprint
- Inexpensive => Great Value!
Cons:
- Weak bass response
Overall, these speakers exceeded my expectations (even in the bass response!). Although they are not the best speakers I've heard, they were bang on the quality/price/size point I was looking for to use in the garage. With a small sub and a crossover set around 90Hz, I wouldn't hesitate to use these as my primary system. Great value!
